Mesothelioma is a highly malignant tumor, a prognosis for survival has averaged just 9-17 months after clinical presentation, and those affected are unfortunately almost always condemned. A hope for a cure comes from a recent study done by researchers at the Institute Pascale of Naples, who work at the Center for Cancer Research of Mercogliano (CROM), which have identified new potential anti-cancer agents that might prove effective in treating this disease .
Mesothelioma is a disease that originated from the serous membrane (mesothelium), thin layers of epithelial cells, which are like a film inside the cavities of the body where major organs are allocated. The mesothelium is shown with different names depending on the area that covers: the abdomen, peritoneal, pericardial space around the heart and pleura and chest. Generally, about 3 in 4 cases, the tumors associated with their origin to the pleural mesothelium and compromise respiratory function.
The main risk factor in pleural mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, a mineral of the group of silicates is very common in nature that has been in the past, broad industrial use because it has a fibrous structure that makes it easy to work and is resistant at high temperatures and virtually indestructible. The word asbestos is derived, in fact, from the greek amiànts and means “unstained”, because the fire is not the dye and not consuming it, but make it clean. The manipulation of this mineral, banned in Italy in 1992, involves the issue of a powder consisting of thin asbestos fibers, fibers over a thousand times thinner than a hair, that once inhaled can easily reach the pulmonary alveoli and pleura, damaging cells and causing cancer.
The tumor appears as a malfunction of the cells of the pleura, which can multiply in an uncontrolled way causing metastasis. The discovery made by researchers at the CROM Mercogliano seems able to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. The research involves, in fact, the use of some molecules, such as pyrazole 3, 4-d pyrimidine, which inhibit the synthesis of a protein kinase src, which controls cell growth.
