Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that most frequently arises from cells of the pleura or peritoneum. The pleural mesothelioma is the most common form, often presents with symptoms in the chest area. Peritoneal mesothelioma is much less common. The symptoms of this cancer are linked to this area of the body, and therefore, bloating, nausea, vomiting and bowel obstruction. The rarest form of mesothelioma is pericardial mesothelioma involving the pericardium.
There are two main types of mesothelioma cells, and epithelial sarcomatoidali. Sometimes these two cell types may be present. The sarcomatoid type is rarer and occurs in only about 15% of cases, and portends a poorer prognosis. In very rare cases, mesothelioma can be benign. This so-called benign mesothelioma can be treated surgically.
What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?
Most people complain of a lack of breath, but often may also have chest pain. Surprisingly, this pain is often pleuritic, that does not worsen with deep breathing. This is surprising, since the pleura is often involved in this disease, and other diseases that involve most of the pleura are often associated with pleural pain (pain that worsens with deep breathing). Patients may be asymptomatic, and find out the disease by chance.
As the disease progresses, shortness of breath increases, as well as weight loss and decreased appetite. The local invasion by the tumor may lead to voice changes, loss of function of the diaphragm, and specific symptoms of the area with the involvement of adjacent structures.
What causes mesothelioma?
Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Usually, it is men over 40 years of age. Others may have been exposed to asbestos in the home, often without knowing it. It is interesting to note that the number of new cases of mesothelioma has been relatively stable since 1983, the same time that the restrictions were imposed on the use of asbestos. In Europe, the number of new cases of mesothelioma continues to rise.

How is mesothelioma diagnosed?
Mesothelioma is diagnosed by pathological examination with a biopsy. The fabric is removed, placed under the microscope, and a pathologist makes a definitive diagnosis and report of pathology. The doctor may order an x-ray or CT scan of the chest or abdomen. There are also other medical tests that can be played:
Thoracoscopy
For pleural mesothelioma, the doctor may look inside the chest cavity with a special instrument called a thoracoscope.
If there is presence of fluid, your doctor may drain the fluid out of your body by putting a needle into the chest and remove the fluid intake. This is called thoracentesis.
Peritoneoscopia
For peritoneal mesothelioma, the doctor may also look inside the abdomen with a special instrument called peritoneoscopio. The peritoneoscopio is placed in an opening in the abdomen. This test is usually done in hospital, under local anesthesia.
Biopsy
If abnormal tissue is found, the doctor will need to cut a small piece to be able to analyze. This is usually done during the thoracoscopy or peritoneoscopia, but can be done during surgery.
What is the prognosis for mesothelioma?
Like most cancers, the prognosis for this disease often depends on how early it is diagnosed and the type of aggression. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is often found in a stage where a cure is found.
What is the treatment for mesothelioma?
There are three traditional types of treatment for patients with malignant mesothelioma. Often two or more of these are combined in the course of treatment:
surgery (taking out the cancer),
Radiation therapy (using high doses of X-rays or other high-energy rays to kill tumor cells)
Chemotherapy.

Surgery: There are several types of surgery used to treat mesothelioma.
A pleurectomy is the removal of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the surrounding tissues.
Depending on how far the cancer has spread, a lung may be removed in an operation called pneumonectomy.
In an extrapleural pneumonectomy, the lung is removed along with the coating and the diaphragm on the affected side. In this paper, the lining around the heart is removed.
Sometimes a pleurectomy is performed. In this paper, the lining of the lung is removed along with as much tumor as possible.
Radiation therapy uses high energy X-rays to kill tumor cells.
The radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation) or materials that produce radiation (radioisotopes) through thin tubes in the area where the cells are found (internal radiation therapy).
Chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy can be administered in pill form, or by intramuscular injection – intravenous.
The chemotherapeutic agents can be administered systemically (through the bloodstream) or in the pleural cavity.
These drugs are generally very toxic and their use should be discussed carefully with your doctor.
