Mesothelioma Causes Other Than Asbestos
What is mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that originates in the mesothelium, the membrane that covers and protects most internal organs of the body. The mesothelium has two layers, one that surrounds the organ itself, and the other forms a sac lining to it. Between these two layers are normally produces a small amount of liquid to lubricate the movement of the organs protected. When the normal cells of the mesothelium become out of control and spread rapidly, it is called mesothelioma. The most common form of mesothelioma, mesothelioma is “pleural”, which occurs in the lining of the lungs. Other forms are “peritoneal” mesothelioma, affecting the lining of the abdominal cavity, and mesothelioma “pericardial”, affecting the lining of the heart.
What causes mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos fiber. Many people were exposed in the military, others because of their work and still others, secondarily, through contact with exposed workers. Because of the latency of cancer may not occur for 20-50 years, and beyond, after exposure.
How common is mesothelioma?
According to the Finnish Institute for Health at Work, Helsinki, Finland, it is expected that the incidence of mesothelioma in Western Europe will peak between 2010 and 2020. Here are the statistics on the incidence, currently available, country by country.

Who is at risk for developing mesothelioma?
Those who have worked directly with asbestos or its products carry the greatest risk of developing mesothelioma, however, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals whose exposure was minimal.
Among the activities at high risk of developing mesothelioma are:
Workers in the metal plates (including shipbuilding)
Constructors of vehicles (including rail vehicles)
Hydraulic
Gas installers
Carpenters
Electricians
Workers in the construction industry
Plasterer
Constructors
Workers handyman
Editors of steel
Painters
Thin sheet metal workers
Welders
What types of products usually contain asbestos?
These products usually contain asbestos in different concentrations. This list is not exhaustive and is only intended as general reference.
Shaped or preformed coatings used for thermal insulation of pipes and boilers
Asbestos spray used as fire protection in ducts, firebreaks in, in panels, partitions, in the axes of the floor, ceiling panels and around structural steel
Insulating boards used for fire protection, thermal insulation, the partitions and pipes
The coatings of asbestos used in firebreaks and ceiling cavities
Double-pressed cardboard, paper and paper products used for insulation of electrical equipment, asbestos paper can also be used as a fire retardant coating on the panels of wood fiber
The asbestos cement products, in both flat and corrugated sheets used for roofing or wall cladding, cement products were also used in gutters, downspouts and the water tanks
Structured coatings (such as Artex)
Roofing material based on bitumen
Vinyl tiles or thermoplastic.
